It’s fantastic to be here again at Page Flipperz for the next stop
on the book tour for my new vampire romance, Masquerade. Masquerade is the
tenth book in my ongoing Vampires Realm romance series. Don’t worry if you haven’t
read the others, as Masquerade does stand alone.
Today I want to talk about writing the hero of Masquerade. The first
things that came to me for Masquerade, were the hero and heroine. They came
with a story to tell and I listened. The plot grew from their pasts and their
feelings, centred on them rather than the other way around.
Vivek is far from your typical hero. He doesn’t want to woo his
heroine from page one. He wants to get her kicked off the guard and stripped of
her captaincy. Vivek is a complicated hero, and also a very typical man. He
approaches his feelings from completely the wrong angle and has done so for
years, ever since the night he patrolled with Sophis and the twin hunters
attacked them, leaving Sophis bleeding out from a dagger in her stomach and him
with a stake in his back.
Seeing Sophis so close to death triggered a change in Vivek. His
instincts said to protect her and the first solution he settled on was having
her removed from the guard. If she were a civilian again, she would be safe.
Male logic, but it makes sense in a basic sort of way. So, rather than being a
hero who is out to charm the heroine and get her into bed, Vivek is a hero who
is out to get her kicked off the guard, and is hurting her without knowing it.
Not the world’s greatest hero.
I’ll admit, I worried when Vivek came to me with his grand master
plan. We argued but in the end he got his way, illustrating that the path to
true love is rarely lined with roses. It’s more realistic that it be lined with
thorny stems and the pain that comes with them. He promised to redeem himself
and see the error of his ways, and I agreed to write him the way he wanted to
be written.
Vivek is not a sadistic, nasty character though. His misguided
attempts to protect Sophis might make him appear that way but as he promised
me, he does realise that he’s going about it all in the wrong way and that he’s
on the verge of losing her. His grand master plan might just fail after all.
He may prove a frustrating hero, but who said that we must love a
hero from the very beginning of the book? Vivek will earn your love more than
any other hero ever has, proving himself able to change in order to win
Sophis’s heart and correct his mistakes with her. He’s a diamond in the rough,
in need of only a little polish to make him sparkle and capture your attention,
and desire. I don’t often write heroes who start out more like a villain, but
it is fun and interesting when it happens. I only hope that you’ll give Vivek a
chance to prove that he’s worthy of your love and worthy of Sophis’s too, and
that a real man, no matter what he has done, is able to see the error of his
ways and will move heaven and earth to make amends and set everything right.
The thing is, for Vivek to set everything right, he must also change
Sophis’s opinion of him and convince her to give him a second chance, and he’s
going to have the fight of his life on his hands to make that happen. Can a
hero who starts out more like a villain redeem himself and win the heart of his
heroine?
To find that out, you’ll have to read the book and see just how
Sophis and Vivek confront their past as they fight for revenge against the twin
hunters who drove them apart.
